Sword Type X

This typology begins with the European swords that coincide with the last type of Jan Petersons Viking Sword typology (1919). It consists of the classic late Viking style sword. These swords are broad bladed with a wide shallow fuller down nearly its whole length and a point that is slightly rounded, though sharper points are sometimes seen. This blade type was produced up through approximately the beginning of the 11th century, but is most often seen in these Viking style blades. The hilts took several forms but the blades were usually less than 85 cm/33.5 inches and the grips were short. The fullers of this type are wide comprising at least half the blade width.

The hilts used on these blades are most often of the Nordic styles (Peterson and Wheeler types) and wheel or tea cozy pommels and straight or slightly down curved crossguards. The wheel pommels often being just round disc shapes as apposed to the more complex styles emerging slightly later.
