Eager audience members did not let the construction on 35W prevent them from attending Craig Johnson's lecture on the medieval sword. The sword has risen from historic artifact to an icon of popular culture. Unfortunately, how it is presented to the public is often determined more by Hollywood budgets and producers rather than historical accuracy. Craig showed how the real swords of the medieval period are a lot more interesting than the ones depicted in movies.
Using modern science and art from the medieval period, Craig revealed historical details of how the sword was truly constructed. His slide presentation debunked the myths surrounding the sword and included the drawings and sword typology of founder, Ewart Oakeshott. Oakeshott's method of documenting and dating historical pieces is used world wide by sword enthusiasts and scholars.
After a brief Q & A, attendees were invited to see the renovation of the future museum space where a lively discussion of medieval weapons and armor continued into the evening.
We thank all the folks who attended and look forward to hosting more events like this in the upcoming year.
